Black Label Is Cup Pick
By
G. K. YULE
Black Label has thrived since he returned from Nelson and he should carry on his winning way in the Rangiora Winter Cup at Rangiora Raceway tomorrow.
The Newport Chief four-year-old was most unlucky when he finished second to Khandallah in the Cardigan Bay Handicap on Tuesday at Richmond Park. He received a shocking run over the final half mile and Iby the time F. E. Newfield I had him properly into the jopen Khandallah had estab j fished a handy lead. He cut linto Khandallah’s lead at a I great rate, but he was still more than a length from him |at the finish. I After that race Black Label I was showing signs of soreness. but his trainer was not concerned. “He’s often like that, but it wears off quickly.’’ said Newfield. “He hasn't stopped eating since that race and as it’s his last run for the season he might as well start.” Black Label has had a meteoric rise to prominence in the last month. His first win was at Washdyke on Maj.
16 and since then he has had four starts for three wins and a second. False Square and John i Charles are two .horses which did not have to slog through the mud in two starts at the Nelson winter meeting. Many of the horses which did line up at Nelson will be feeling the effects of racing and travelling and False Square and John Charles might prove too good for them. False Square is one of the most promising stayers in his class and in spite of some rather disappointing racing recently he should be a big danger. John Charles came with a good staying run to win at Ashburton on June 1. The ■extra half mile at Kangiora should not be too much foi him.
