WELLINGTON, June 10.
A major tragedy in the mountains, with many young lives lost is forecast by the chairman of the search and rescue committee of the Federated Mountain Clubs (Inspector L. D. Bridges) in his annual report.
“I believe concern must be expressed by the federation' in regard to the six fatalities’ which occurred when training! courses were being conducted by professional instructors,”' said Inspector Bridges, who is also head of the Police Search and Rescue Organisation. These fatalities occurred when five boys drowned ini Lake Matahina and when one boy died of exposure in Arthur’s Pass. “The national campaign for mountain safety and the promotion of short courses has probably generated a tremendous demand by youth for busheraft training,” he said. Organisers and instructors ishould be responsible and technically skilled, he said.
