Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Angkor Wat, the ruins of the aneient capital of the Khmers in Cambodia, has been occupied by Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops, according to a cable message carried on page 11 today. Earlier this week, U Thant, Secretary-General of the United Nations, made a plea for the preservation of the rains, which date from the tenth century to the twelfth century, AD. and comprise temples dedicated to the Hindu Gods, shrines associated with Hinayana Buddhism, royal palaces and a funeral temple. Angkor Wat was abandoned in the fifteenth century. Jungle is spreading through the area.
