HOUSES FOR EXPORT
A New Zealand firm has developed a low-cost house using 20-gauge steel studs and specialy-designed frames. The manufacturers say that these houses could become a valuable export to Pacific Basin countries. The manufacturers are Gunic Industries, Ltd. The new development began from the simple walling concept common in today’s buildings. The houses are designed to provide basic accommodation needs for people with low incomes, and can be erected with semi-skilled labour. Prototypes have been built in Fiji and New Guinea, where there are urgent housing problems. Houses built with the new method are about one-sixth of the weight of a similar timber structure, can be built in a quarter of the time needed with timber, and re quire a minimum of tools They are hurricane-proofed against winds of up to 135 miles an hour, and are vermin, and rot-proof.
