HODGES DEAD
Johnny Hodges, the famous jazz saxophonist who visited New Zealand earlier this year with Duke Ellington’s orchestra, has died of a heart attack in New York.
Hodges, who was born in 1906, joined Ellington’s band in 1928 and had played with him most of the time since then.
Noted for his rich, creamy tone and simple, elegant lines, Hodges was perhaps the greatest master in the traditional school of alto saxophonists.
