RACING Stiff Test For Bargain Hunter

Bargain Hunter, winner of his last four races, will face his stiffest test for the season in the Miss New Zealand Handicap, one of the feature flat races on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday.

As a three-year-old last season Bargain Hunter won this race under 8-4. This time he will carry lOst 21b, 111 b more than Shewetta, this season’s C.J.C. Stewards’ and Great Easter Handicap winner, 131 b more than Glamis Lad. one of the South Island’s best winter performers, and 221 b more than Princess Mellay. winner of the New Zealand Oaks last November. Glamis Lad showed a flash of his best form in running fourth against the open sprinters at Waimate last Saturday.

At Wingatui a year ago. Glamis Lad and Bargain Hunter carried off the T.A.B. doubles on both days of the Dunedin meeting, and their good recbrds on the course will intensify interest in their clash over seven furlongs on Saturday. The leading jockey, E. J. Didham, was associated with both horses in their four victories a year ago. Canterbury has a direct

interest in the Miss New Zealand Handicap through Watchman, which was run-ner-up to Bargain Hunter over seven furlongs at Riccarton last week. The second leg of the “straight” T.A.B. double will be the Birthday Handicap. This was run on the second day of last year’s meeting and was won by Glamis Lad. South Canterbury should again have strong prospects this year with the hard-wearing-consistent Gay Doctor and the improving Lady Glory in a field of nine.

The on-course concession double will be on the Dunedin Hack Hurdles and the Brighton Hack Handicap. A jackpot, on races two to seven, will open with a pool of $B7O.
