Many Nurses Seek Job In Sydney
An Australian who owns four luxury nursing homes in Sydney received a considerable surprise when he placed an advertisement in “The Press” seeking trained or untrained New Zealand girls as staff.
"1 might have got one or two replies if the advertisement had been placed in a Sydney paper but I was quite staggered with the 150 applications I received," said Mr A. Norton, yesterday. His advertisement for nurses mentioned good salary and. accommodation, and assistance with air fares. The recruiting scheme was not a gimmick, he said. The girls would pay their own air fare if their intended employment with him was only of short duration, but those signing up for a minimum of 12 months work at one of his nursing homes would have their fares paid. Mr Norton, who has lived in Australia for the last 21 years, said that for much of his time in the real estate business his work had been concerned primarily with the building and development of private hospitals and nursing homes in Australia.
He plans to build 25 moteltype units in which staff at his nursing homes w’ll live. Mr Norton said it was very difficult to find nursing staff in Australia. The idea of trying to obtain nurses in New Zealand catne from one
of his matrons, who is a New Zealander.
He hopes that the girls will, on returning to New Zealand at the end of their contracts, interest others to go so that the homes could be staffed on rotation. Ten of the girls who ap-i plied have been selected and; they will go to Sydney in the; next few weeks.
