TEL AVIV, May 19.

Israeli jets screamed Into action ejrly today tn silence Egyptian artillery batteries providing cover for a commando force sent across the Suez Canal in a night raid.

A military spokesman said that Israeli ground troops engaged the raiding force immediately they crossed the canal in the southern sector and routed them.

The Israelis said two Egyptians were killed in the encounter which was made under cover of Egyptian fire from the western bank of the waterway, the Associated Press reported. There were no Israeli casualties in the fighting, the spokesman added.
