Xavier College May Move
Alternative sites are being sought for Xavier College but the school is unlikely to move from its present site for about 10 years, the chairman of the Xavier College Board (Father J. Cuneen) said on Thursday. Alternative sites being considered by the Catholic diocese education board are in Halswell and Burwood, where there has been recent development.
The college is at 122 Barbadoes Street, next to the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, and is close to the proposed elevated motorway through the city. There are problems of industrial development and traffic noise from Moorhouse Avenue and Barbadoes Street.
Father Cunneen said the board has been looking for sites for a number of years in the event of the inner city becoming completely industrialised.
Xavier College has a roll of 520 pupils from Forms I to VI; it draws pupils from the 25 Catholic parishes in the city, and some from as far away as Lincoln, Leeston, and Kaiapoi.
