Charles, of New Zealand, shot a one-under-par 71 and was six strokes behind the leader after the first round of the $111,600 Greater New Orleans open golf tournament. The little-known R. Mitchell had a seven-under 65, to lead a group of five, including the South African, G. Player, by one stroke. j
