Ruapuna Races
A 45-lap production saloon-car race will be the main feature event at the Canterbury Car Club's race meeting at Ruapuna Park on Sunday. There will also be a 15-lap sub-feature event for New Zealand-made single-seater racing cars.
The main event, the Rothmans Production Saloon Race, had earlier this week attracted 11 entries, and more entries were expected to come in. The race will be run in four classes. In the class for cars of 2000 c.c. and over, the entries include R. McPhail of Christchurch in a VB' Valiant V.1.P., G. Thorn, son of Wellington in a Holden Monaro, S. Dymond of Christchurch in a 3.3-litre Vauxhall, and W. Sprague of Timaru in a 3.3-litre Vauxhall Victor. The 1301 c.c. to 2000 c.c. class entries include D. Dawson of Wellington in a Fiat 125, A. Farr in a Fiat 1500, and V. Blackburn in a Datsun 1600.
The 1001 c.c. to 1300 c.c. class includes M. McDonald
in a Wclseley 1300, P. de Lore—better known for his single-seater exploits—in a Toyota Corolla, and C. Collins, who this season has driven the V 8 Falcon, in a Ford Escort. The sole entry in the under 1000 c.c. class earlier this week was M. Hamilton in a Mini-Cooper. In addition to the two main events, there will be the usual programme of scratch and handicap races for saloons, single-seaters, and sports racing cars. The 15-lap race for New Zea-land-built cars will be sponsored by P.D.L, Industries, Ltd.
Many Faults During a nation-wide “free inspection” week in Britain recently it was found one car in four had defective tyres, and one in three had faulty brakes. About 17 per cent of the cars checked had play in the steering box, and 24 per cent had worn steering joints.-
