Youths Found With Automatic Pistol

WANGANUI, April 16.
Four youths, aged from 12 to 15 years, were stopped in a stolen car by a police roadblock near Fordell early today and found t< be carrying an automatic pistol and ammr.ution.
A Wanganui police spokesman later voiced extreme concern as to how the youths came into possession of the weapon.
“This sort; of thing could have led to a massacre,” said Superintendent P. J. McKenzie. “Inquiries are proceeding into the pistol’s origin.” The youths, aged 12. 13, 14 and 15, are from Turangi. They were apprehended at the roadblock three or four miles beyond Fordell, on the Hunterville-Wanganui back road at 6.20 a.m. They were travelling in a
car reported stolen from the Taihape district The pistol was discovered when the youths made off across the fields after leaving the car. It is understood they dropped the ammunition for the pistol while being chased by the police party. All four would be charged in the Wanganui Children’s Court, the spokesman said.
