Criticism Of Parades
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 16. Shop owners in Queen Street have complained to the Auckland City Council and the police that Friday night parades are seriously affecting business. A letter to both bodies from the Queen Street Business Association asks for a further examination of the problem.
The association’s newsletter says the executive is concerned about the increasing numbers of unauthorised parades on Friday nights. “Many stores, which enjoyed good store traffic, now report that for at least two hours on the nights of these parades their shops are empty,” it says. “This is not a case of shopping trends, but an engendered fear by the public that they might get involved with the demonstrators, so they leave the area of assembly and early concentration.”
