An application by Grocers United Stores Properties, Ltd, to the No. 2 Town and Country Planning Appeal Board for permission to construct a supermarket and car park on the north-west corner of the intersection of Wilsons and Gamblins Roads, was refused in a reserved decision yesterday. Mr P. T. Mahon appeared for G.U.S. Properties, Ltd; Mr J. N. Matson for the Regional Planning Authority which opposed the application, as well as other objectors; and Mr A. H. Young for the Christchurch City Council which supported the application provided that the supermarket be set 15ft back from Gamblins Road. The board consists of Messrs J. H. .Luxford, S.M. (Auckland), the chairman; R. B. Beaumont (Lower Hutt), L. P. Blunt (Kaikoura), and C. M. Turner (Whakatane). Giving the decision of the board, Mr Luxford said that having regard to the evidence adduced at the hearings, that the public interest would be best served by refusing the application. The question of costs was reserved with leave to any party to apply.
