No Injuries In Akaroa

Prompt action by fire-fight-ers aboard the Australiabound 17,500-ton British passenger ship Akaroa yesterday averted an Atlantic disaster involving 550 people. The Akaroa, carrying 416 passengers and 134 crew from London to Sydney, sent a dramatic SOS call early yesterday saying fire had broken out in the ship’s engine room. Four hours later, the United States Coast Guard reported it had received a signal saying the fire had been extinguished. Captain Brian Hi Ilia told the owners in’ a ship-to-shore telephone call that no-one had been injured and morale among passengers and crew was very high.
