Haliburton Wins Major Race In Yachting

A. Haliburton, sailing the Moth Checkmate, won the Mount Pleasant Trophy from a fleet of 49 starters in the major club yachting event on Saturday.

The winner of the New Zealand Junior Cherub championship, Rana (N. and G. England), finished second, ahead of another Junior Cherub, Bonanza, skippered by R. Ineson.

Canterbury had the most intensive programme, being forced to re-sail several previously postponed events in conjunction with other fixtures, as clubs entered their last few weeks of competition. Although they were forced to withdraw because of gear breakages on Saturday, G. S. Mander and D. R. Nixon (Caprice) were convincing winners of the W. J. Toomey Memorial for A division yachts. The Elmer Cup, sailed concurrently with the final race of the memorial series, was won by Trekka (H. L. England and G. S. Shapland).

The South Island champions, Kehua (Javelin, D. Elder and R. May) and Relent (R Class, J. Rountree and B. Kitson), won their respective events, the fourth heat of the Norris Cup (B division) . and the Kennett Memorial. The Priddey Cup handicap race in this division went to Lady Kay, a Javelin crewed by R. Norris and R. Bryant. The C division championship and handicap honours were annexed by Tahuti (Junior Cherub, V. Nelson and J. Boraston), while amongst the P. Class com-

petitors, C. Wales (Sprat), and K. Welsh (Moby Dick), were over-all winners of cup series. G. A.
