RACING Papahu Fancied At Waipa Today

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Improved in any way by his race on the first day of the Auckland meeting, Papahu would be the hardest to beat in the Anzac Intermediate Handicap at Te Awamutu today. 1

Ellerslie form suggests Del Mar is another good prospect in the first leg of the Waipa Racing Club’s T.AJJ. double.

Papahu finished eighth out of 16 in his one race at Ellerslie, the President’s Handicap, 10 furlongs, which Charon won from Lucky Steve.

Del Mar won the first of two attempts in intermediate races and with any luck would have been successful as well in the second. In his latest run before Ellerslie, Papahu finished sixth in an intermediate mile at Tauranga on March . 21. That was his first race since January 10 when he won impressively over 10 furlongs at Avondale. Papahu is four but he has raced only during this season. His first six attempts brought three wins, a second and two thirds and his races at Tauranga and Ellerslie last month are the only others he has had. Del Mar won easily in a well-run mile at Ellerslie on March 28 and struck all sorts of trouble before finishing fifth over a mile on the middle day. She was to have tackled 11 furlongs last Saturday but had to be scratched when the ground became too heavy for her. Meat Consistent With two firsts, seven seconds, a fourth and a fifth in 11 starts this season, Del Mar must be one of the most consistent gallopers anywhere. One. of her notable seconds was behind Mediate at Te Aroha and another

. time she was runner-up to . Royal Andrew. Anticipation showed plenty 1 of speed before she. failed in . the A.R.C. President’s Handi- , cap. She managed a second ' and a fourth over 10 furlongs at Whangarei in her two most recent starts before- ' hand. From No. 1 at the j start in this one she should be very prominent St Crispian, a promising four-year-old, and Proper Verdict seem the next-best candidates. Both have been running miles as though they might be ready to go a middle distance solidly. The fine sprinter-miler, Grizzly, and Skint Dip and Kalgoorlie will very likely dispute the finish of the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Winston Churchill Handicap. A sprint at Paeroa on March 14, his first after a spell, and another at Ellerslie on March 30 should have brought Grizzly close to his best again. He ran very prominently in bis Ellerslie race, won by Honey Belle in 1.35 4-5. He ended up fifth. Wide Barrier Skint Dip was beaten by his very wide barrier position in the A.R.C. Easter Handicap, his last race. But he had a good win the time before, over six furlongs at Paeroa. Kalgoorlie is very fast and is almost certain to be hard to catch if he gets quickly to the lead. Reoffered is another possibility and so is Corrandulla, which shaped creditably enough although only eighth In the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. The jackpot will be on races three to eight inclusive. The starting pool is $9825.50. The weather cleared during the week-end. The prospects yesterday were for excellent going.
