G. Player Brilliant In Greensboro Open
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) GREENSBORO, (North Carolina). G. Player (South Africa) emerged from an eight-man scramble with a brilliant finalround 65 to win the $155,000 Greater Greensboro Open golf tournament.
Player, protected by a sprinkling of plain-clothes policemen in the huge gallery that followed him, finished the gruelling match with a 72-hole total of 271, 13 under par on the 7034 yd Sedgefleld Country Club course. The . victory was worth about $30,000 to the little man who has been the object of some veiled threats because of his country’s apartheid policies. Player, a physical fitness advocate, went ahead when he clipped five strokes off par in a six-hole spurt that started on the par-five sixth hole. It carried him past M. Barber, who finished with a 68 for 273, two strokes back. R. J. Charles (New Zealand) finished in eleventh
place with a 279 total after rounds of 71, 72, 69 and 67. He won about $3OOO.
