GUIDE TO PRISONS
Assessment By Former Inmate (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright! LONDON, April 6. A former convict yesterday published a five-star guide to the major prisons in Britain, recommending them on the basis of food, atmosphere and surroundings. The anonymous author, writing in the “Sunday Mirror,” said he had paid regular visits to the 13 establishments he listed, and gave Brixton and the bleak penitentiary on Dartmoor the top five-star rating. Brixton, he said, allowed good table d’hote meals from a nearby restaurant to be served in cells, although bills had to be paid weekly in advance. Dartmoor had a good atmosphere and a first-class governor, and the cuckoo was audible early on summer mornings. Lewes Prison, in Sussex, rated only three stars. “The food is only reasonable but there is a good cricket pitch and fine views of the South Downs," the author said.
