RAIN FAILS TO STOP METHVEN SHOW

In spite of miserable, wet weather and ankledeep mud, the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show took place as planned on Saturday with only the machinery parade having to be cancelled. The president of the association (Mr I. A. Hart) said it was only the third wet show day in 30 years. Mr Hart said he felt the organising committee had made the right decision in deciding to hold the show as the weather in no way appeared to dampen the enthusiasm of competitors. As was to be expected in spite of considerable district support gate takings were $324 compared with $BOl last year. This deficit said the secretary (Mr A. L. Cornwall) could have been caused by the lack of out of town visitors. The “fun” started towards the end of the show when late departing cars slithered around in trenches of mud. Several tractors were kept busy towing such trapped and bogged vehicles out to the roadway. The member of Parliament for Ashburton (Mr C. A. A. McLachlan) congratulated the organisers, competitors, and the spectators for their effort and praised Methven for continuing to lead the way in diversifying the exhibits and events at the show. The Coop team from Methven won the wild cow milking competition .followed closely by teams from Lincoln. Miss Brigitte Parsonson was crowned “Pastoral Queen." Aged 20, and coining originally from Tai Tapu, she works in Methven as a landscape designer. An ash-blonde, she wore a violet wool frock with white stitching, a wide be-lt with a circular tortoise shell buckle, with brown accessories. Second was Jeanette Lang, an Ashburton nurse, and Alison Henry, a school teacher, at Lauriston. was third. The eight contestants were intoduced by Miss Sonja Mee. of the New Zealand Federation of Country Girls’ Clubs. The highlight of the chopping events was the New Zealand championship 15 inch underhand chop, won by W. Evans, of Grey mouth.
