RACING Sandbank And Shipboard Rangiora Fancies

Sandbank is expected to spearhead a formidable South Canterbury challenge in the President’s Handicap, first leg of the North Canterbury Racing Club’s T.A.B. double today.

Mr R. G. Gerard’s big seven-year-old has shown good form both as a sprinter and a middle - distance performer at his last three starts, and his second to Governor General in the feature race at Ashburton last Tuesday probably clinched favouritism for him.

Royal Blue, a double acceptor. was withdrawn from the President's Handicap yesterday. and will run against the sprinters in the Kaiapoi Handicap. with H. N. Rauhihi as his rider. Mrs W. H. Williamson will still have a runner in the President’s Handicap in Aeolian. He pulled himself ragged in the Fletcher Cup at Ashburton, and if he does not settle better for G. R. Gullfery today. J R- Shaw may switch him back to sprint races. Rauhihi. who rode Royal Blue when the chestnut ran a creditable second to Gee Tee in the open sprint at Ashburton on Tuesday, won the Kaiapoi Handicap a year ago, on Roval Blue's stablemate,:

Billy Joe. A second winner for Rauhihi that day was Domic, and this same combination, successful again at Ashburton last Tuesday, will come in for solid backing in the Cust High-weight today. The Cust High-weight is the first leg of the on-course concession double, and it might develop into a three-sided affair with Lord Macquario and Black Wonder the other principals. The consistent South Canterbury pair. Flying Melda and Persian Crusade, and the improving Riccarton-trained Carafin are expected to dominate the finish of the Oxford Hack Handicap No. 1, second leg of the course double. Unless Rangiora has rain today the track will give good footing. Fields are:
