Aust. Spinners Likely To Trouble Central

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. The stage is set for an intriguing struggle between the Central Districts captain, M. J. F. Shrimpton, one of the best players of spin bowling in New Zealand, and the Australian spinners, K. J. O’Keeffe and T. J. Jenner, on the second day of the cricket match at Pukekura Park today.

The pitch has a reputat ion for suiting spinners and both! Jenner and O’Keeffe; were getting turn from it late on Saturday. The week-end has been fine; at New Plymouth and the; pitch dried out well in Satur-' day’s sun. It might again pro-; ivide both swing and cut for l ithe faster bowlers in the first; (hour, but it is the spinners; iwho are expected to be the! main threat to Central. | At close of play on Saturday, Central was 61 for two, with Shrimpton at the crease, after Australia had recovered from a disastrous 106 for six at lunch to be all out for 238 The fight-back was led by

the 23-year-old G. R. Davies, who came to the wicket with the Australian score at 72 for four and was 105 not out at the finish Davies found worthy partners in Jenner, O’Keeffe, D. K. Lillee and A. Thomson, add- | ing 43 runs with Jenner, 31 1 with O’Keeffe. 59 with Lillee‘ and 32 with Thomson. Davies completed his cen-! tury in 185 minutes and hit! 16 fours. | Early in his innings,; i Davies had to work hard for: !his runs but after reaching 1 his 50 he won control of the bowling. It was a fighting innings of real quality and without him the Australians would have been in a sorry position after being put in to bat by Shrimpton. Six For Andrews There was little life in the pitch but both R. O. Collinge and B. Andrews were able to get both swing and cut and they swept through the early Australian batting. Andrews finished with the very fine figures of six for 67. M. R. Ryan and D. Payton opened the Central innings and had little trouble handling the fast attack of Lillee and Thomson. They took the score to 42 in good time before Ryan failed to get over a square cut and clipped the | ball hard to G. A. Watson, who took a fine catch.

Shortly before stumps, Central suffered a bigger blow when the New Zealand captain, B. E. Congdon, went down the pitch to smother Jenner’s spin, missed the ball, and was .stumped by A. Steele.
