Hawarden Maintains Show Reputation

i In spite of a wet show day coming at the end of a season which will be long-remembered for the worst drought in the district’s history, the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association maintained its reputation for excellence in the number of entries ' and quality at its annual show on Saturday. The fact that gate takings were well. down because of rain early ’in the day was no indication of the success of the occasion from the point of view of exhibitors and the farming community. Entries in all classes were well supported, and the numbers were exceptional for the season and only slightly down on last year’s entries which came at the end of an outstanding summer.

Corriedales again provided the second largest yarding to be seen in the country and were the star feature of the show in a district where finewoolled sheep have earned an outstanding reputation. Sheep entries generally were well maintained and totalled 518.

The sustained interest in horse classes at the show has now become accepted as one of its regular features, and this was maintained again this year with entries of 174 being only a little down on last year. Welcome light rain had fallen in the Hawarden district for most of the week, and it was not surprising when show day dawned cloudy and wet. The programme of judging and ring events continued uninterrupted except for a period about midday when a particularly heavy

shower made conditions too difficult.

The effect of the weather was felt most by the association in its gate receipts, which at $7B were $142 down on last year. Speakifig at the end of the grand parade, Mr H. L. Pickering, M.P., said lie was surprised to find entries had been maintained at a high level not only in quality but in quantity, in spite of the bad season.

Mr Pickering said farming was facing a difficult period, but he hoped farmers would go into the autumn season with the same determination to give of their best as that with which they had brought forward their entries for the show.

Exhibitors in the Corriedale ram open classes were to be congratulated on bringing their entries out in such splendid order, the judge of these classes (Mr A. M. Saunders, Ashburton) said. The ram hoggets. however, were showing signs of the drought. The over-all standard was quite good, but there was a slight tailing off in quality. The number of entries was again high. Mr Saunders said the champion ram was an excellent example of the breed. It was a very well balanced 'Sheep with a grand head and a good eye. Mr I. C. Johnston, the judge of the Corriedale ewe open classes, said he found the overall quality to be good, and the place winners excellent. In style and character the wool was outstanding. Mr C. G. Gardiner, judge of the farmers’ breeding ewes, said he found fine, big-framed sheep in the aged ewe classes. The champion in the pair of woolly ewes class was a credit to the owner.

He said the general absence of wool blindness was an encouraging trend to find in farmers’ breeding ewes. “I would like to see more entries in this section, however, in view of the high standing of the local ewe fair as a market for breeding ewes.” Mr Gardiner said.

The judge of the Ryeland section (Mr J. T. Brown. Temuka) said that, in spite of depleted entries: resulting from a difficult season in the district, the prize winners were worthy representatives of the breed. Some entries, however, were a bit

jaded, but this was only to be expected. He said he would like to congratulate the winners for their efforts in a season of drought, and thanked the association for its invitation to fudge. "Although entries in the Erime sheep section were not arge, the quality whs creditable considering the disastrous drought atmosphere in the district,” the judge of this section (Mr S. M. Wood) said.

; Mr Wood said the class for , the packaged meat trade was a i most interesting one, and ) should be encouraged as much ) as possible because of its imi porta nee to the export in- ’ dustry. The judge of the Border Leii cester classes (Mr P. R. Jeb- ? son) commented on the ini’ creased entries for the HawarI den show. He said this was an ? indication of the increasing in- • lerest in this breed of sheep. The judge of the back and ’ hunter sections (Mr R. E. Adair) said the standard of jumping ; was fantastic, considering the i• wet state of the ground. The • quality was as good as ever, i Grain and seed entries showed the effects of the • drought both in numbers and ■ quality, according to the > judge. Mr J. R. Hughes. of ) Christchurch. One or two I entries in the wheat classes could not be considered be- ; cause of bug damage. • Mr Hughes said hay entries were of a particularly high 1 standard, considering the sea1 son.
