ITALIAN CRISIS
Settlement Likely (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME, Mar. 22. Italy’s six-week political crisis today appeared on the verge of settlement, all signs pointing to the caretaker 1 Prime Minister, Mr Mariano Rumor, carrying through successfully his second attempt to set up a new Centre-Left Government The executive of the Socialist Party, one of the four prospective coalition partners, last night came out by a large majority in favour of a 22-page policy document presented to the parties by Mr Rumor as a basis for forming a Government, according to a Socialist spokesman. The central committee will meet tomorrow to make the final decision—and a positive reply seems certain. The central committee of the Social Democrats, another of the Centre-Left parties, will also meet tomorrow to take a final decision. A Social Democrat leader has already judged the document as “positive.”
The two other prospective coalition partners are Mr Rumor’s own Christian Democrats and the Republicans.
