Treffers (Southland), wait for officials to tell them their times at the end of the New Zealand 1500 metres freestyle championship final. Treffers won the race in a New Zealand record time of 17min 24.5sec. Kindred also broke the record with his time of 17min 29.4sec, but, even with his two wins over Treffers in the 400 metres and 800 metres freestyle, he was not nominated for the New Zealand team to contest the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games. Treffers was nominated.
