Policy For Export Of Paua Announced
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 20. A policy to encourage the maximum processing of paua in New Zealand before export, and at the same time to control New Zealand’s paua stocks, was announced today by the Minister of Marine and Fisheries (Mr McCready).
j “There will be a total bar on the export of paua in the ? ra ■ state," he said. “There (. will, however, be no restricI. tion on the export of paua - processed to the state of being bleached and canned, and 1 have also given my approval » fo: a limited export of bleached frozen paua for six months until canning techniques and marketing can be developed." He said there was a similar ban on the export of un- , processed paua shell. The canned product sold ’’ for about four times the price /per pound of the raw frozen '[paua, he said. ( 1 “Processing of paua helps in the diversification of fishing exports and also gives more employment opportunie :ties to our labour force, he 1 said. e “I am hopeful that we can ■ continue to expand into over- ’ seas marketing. There is a ' world-wide demand for paua, and in recent years the indus1 try has shown great develop--1 rnent in New Zealand.
