CHAIR OF SOLID STATE PHYSICS APPLICATIONS are invited for appointment as the Foundation Professor and Head of the Department of Solid State Physics, Research School of Physical Sciences. The new Department of Solid State Physics will join the six presently existing Departments (Astronomy, Engineering Physics, Geophysics and Geochemistry, Mathematics, Nuclear Physics. Theoretical Physics) and two Units (Diffusion Research Unit and Electron and lon .Diffusion Unit) within the Research School of Physical Sciences. An eighth Department —Applied Mathematics—will be established in the course of the next year. The School of General Studies has Departments of Physics and Theoretical Physics, with some work in solid state physics. The new Department will be developed during the next 2 or 3 years to an ultimate size of about 11 staff (including seven academics) with 10 to 12 students to support its work. The Head of the Department will be responsible for recruiting staff and developing a research programme. The Schoo! already possesses a good deal of capital equipment of value for solid state physics research: in addition to liquid nitrogen and helium, 3 high field magnets will be available. Two exist—a 70 kilogauss d.c. system and a 165 kiiogauss pulsed (60 seconds of field) system. A magnet, designed in the Department of Engineering Physics for 300 Kg+, is now approaching test and will be capable of holding its peak field for some 15 seconds. It is expected that, in collaboration with the Department of Engineering Physics, a considerable fraction of the work of the new Department will be associated with the magnet facilities. The normal salary for a Head of Department is $13,000 per annum and there is entitlement to one year’s study leave on full pay. plus a grant of not more than $3200 towards expenses, in every four years. Salaries are currently under review and improvements are expected. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern, with supplementary benefits. UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND SENIOR LECTURER IN ARCHITECTURE (Two Positions) SENIOR LECTURER IN REGIONAL AND TOWN PLANNING LECTURER IN REGIONAL AND TOWN PLANNING Under the recently appointed Head of the Department of Architecture, Professor Gareth Roberts, the courses in Architecture are being reviewed, changed and developed. Senior Lecturers with experience in modern architectural teaching methods are being sought to participate in the organisation of, and to teach in the course leading to the B.Arch. Degree. One of the persons appointed will be responsible for the teaching of Structures and should be appropriately experienced in this field. The teaching of Regional and Town Planning in the University is also being extended and developed under Professor Lewis Keeble. Last year a course leading to the Degree of Master of Urban Studies was introduced and other courses are contemplated. Applicants should be qualified and experienced in the field of physical planning and be prepared to play a full part in the framing and development of teaching courses. The salary for a Senior Lecturer is at present within the range $7500-$8750 a year and for a Lecturer 55400.57300, but geademic salaries are actively under review. The University provides superannuation similar to F.S.S.U., housing assistance, study leave and travel grants for a permanent appointee of Lecturer status and above.
