Efforts To Hasten Meat Ships Hindered
r (Aew Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Maith 19. New Zealand efforts to speed the turnround of ships had been almost negated by industrial unrest on United Kingdom docks | and the failure of special facilities at the i London Royal Docks, a report to the electoral committee of the Meat Board said today.
The report of the board’s shipping committee said that if the experience of the last ] two years, and particularly of recent months, was a ] guide, the problems of getting ] New Zealand meat discharged in Britain without serious and I expensive delays or diversions to other ports were I likely to become more diffi- ] cult. [ In contrast, the report ■ noted of the trade to North America: “In spite of the greatly increased complexi--1 ties introduced by the United ' States global quota on beef. I veal and mutton, and the 1 phenomenal rise in exports to 1 Canada last year, the pro- ' gramming of shipping to North America has proceeded • relatively smoothly.” : The report said that in ■ New Guinea, Singapore and ■ Malaysia the main difficulty ■ that New Zealand exporters faced, compared with their 1 Australian competitors, was ! the lack of a regular shipping . service. “The entry of the New Zea- ! land Export Line to Melai
nesia and the re-entry of the Holm Shipping Company to Melanesia and Polynesia are assisting the situation, but it remains to be seen how quickly a volume of trade will develop to sustain these services,” said the report.
