Squash Team From Aust.
The Australian under 23 squash rackets team will play a Canterbury invitation side at the Christchurch club’s courts this evening. Although little is known of the Australian players, they are expected to be well up to New Zealand standard, and as such may prove too strong for the invitation four.
Heading the local side is D. R. Preston (Christchurch), who has quickly re-established himself as the top South Islander after a period overseas. Preston will want a good performance against the visitors to impress the New Zealand selectors.
G. L. Bird (Ashburton), a New Zealand representative a few years ago, will probably lack match fitness, but his vast array of stroke guarantees that his opponent will have to work hard for victory.
At third and fourth are J. H. N. Pine (Christ’s College) and B. V. Hamilton (Christchurch). They are fast approaching top form, although both lack match play, at this stage of the season.
The Australian team is.- R. Jolly (Victoria). M. Donnelly. (Queensland). A. Jewell (New! South Wales), and R. Meule-j man (Western Australia).
