STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD

A Russian student, Vasily Alexeyev, yesterday became the first man to lift a total of 600 kilograms (13221 b in the super heavy-weight class of the international Friendship Cup weight-lifting tournament in Minsk. The 28-year-old Alexeyev, ranked only tenth at the end of last year, has spectacularly shot to the top in the last three months. He reached his mark with a press of 212.5 kilograms,! a snatch of,. 170, and a jerk of 217.5 on his first try. He thus improved by five! kilograms his own world record set two months
i ago. Yet, in December,' his best stood at only 530 kilograms. Alexeyev’s performance must have come as a blow to the Olympic champion, L. Zhabotinsky (Russia) and the world champion, J. ; Dube (United States),' both of whom had pledged to become the first man in the world to lift 600 kilograms.
