Another Bowls Win To Mrs Wilkie
(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. Mrs E. Wilkie (Waikato) firmly established herself as the top singles player in women’s bowls this year when she won the New Zealand champion-of-champions singles yesterday.
In the final she beat Mrs; H. Harper (South Auckland),’, 24-11, after 19 ends. Mrs Wilkie also won the 1 singles title at the Dominion 1 tournament and yesterday’s 1 victory put the seal on a most ] successful year. Also her winij in the final avenged her de-: 1 feat to Mrs Harper in the fifth j round, taking away one of her ' two lives. In the final, which was mar- ■ red by rain, it was Mrs Wilkie j all the way. Her play was - precise and her drawing left] little to be desired. Mrs Harper, after her fine’ early morning win over Mrs! Wilkie, could not handle the; conditions. She was either too ] heavy or too light in most] of her shots. The only phase; in which she excelled was’ driving and this was not suf-h ficient for her to beat Mrs], Wilkie. ' In the fifth round matches,]* resumed yesterday after be-1 ing interrupted by rain on I, Wednesday, Mrs Harper beat Mrs Wilkie, 16-14, after trail-r ing 10-12 when the match was]] called off after 16 ends. j
The defending champion, Mrs P. Dymond (Taranaki) beat Mrs E. Smith (South Canterbury), 16-13, and Mrs D. McLeod (Southland) defeated Mrs J. Osborne (Manawatu), 17-16. In the semi-finals, Mrs Wilkie beat Mrs Dymond, 24-12, and Mrs Harper took a two on the final end to eliminate Mrs P. Reynolds (Otago), 1615.
