Englishman’s Duels Speedway Highlight
The appearance of C. Bailey, an Englishman, and his duels with a local rider withoverseas experience A. Brown, were the highlights of rather dull racing at the Templeton speedway stadium on Saturday evening..
Th. meeting finished at 11.15 p.m, when three events were still to be run. Overwatering of the track and difficulty in restoring it to favourable conditions forced officials to stop proceedings, an announcement which the smaller-than-usual crowd did not like after a number of stoppages earlier in the programme. Brown and Bailey won their first race, and they both had a win and a second in the two handicap events they contested. Brown convincingly won the scratch race from Bailey. Their riding had a daredevil touch which most other riders could not match. Fast acceleration out of the bends and disciplined cornering round them marked their performances.
Of the other-riders, S. Woods had two win? and S. Foster, D. Beckwith and R. McKinlay a win and a second. A heavy track in some races prevented fast times and in a race of four laps Immediately after a watering of the track. Woods took 104 sec to travel four laps. W. Philp and his passenger, D. Wylie, were the most successful side-car riders. They won two of the three events, the first from a handicap of 130 yards. Only two three-quarter midget races were seen but in the speed-car events D. Harding, who stayed in Christchurch after the New Zealand championship last week-end, won the only handicap event and after a good start in the scratch event he broke an axle on the first lap. In the same race E. Murray faltered when leading, and T. Hall won Next Saturday the South. Island will meet the North, Island at solo racing. Results were: Motor-cyclec Handicap Events* (four laps). —Race 1: A. Brown (160) 1. D '
