Weather Again Upsets Club Yachting

Unfavourable conditions disrupted the club yachting programme for the second successive week-end when rain forced the postponement of events at Pleasant Point and Mount Pleasant yesterday.

However the’ Christchurch club was able to sail its final I heats of the Life Members’ Cup .(open class handicap) and Sea ■Spray Trophy <P Class divisional handicaps) and the first 'race of the Priest and Boyle senes was held at Stewart's Gully. There were three starters in lhe open class al the Chrisl- ‘ church club—a fourth. G. C. Penney's catamaran. Stampede, was damaged when being launched before the race—and ]W. H. Beere was successful in liis Finn. Fintastic. Beere had figured in an exciting tussle with another Finn. !sailed by G. Dawson, during the J first heat on Saturday Beere finally gained the upper hand to beat Dawson across the finishing line by Isec and was placed fifth on handicap Line honours were won by Penney from Ocelot (E. Jackson), while the Junior Cherub. Bonanza (M. and R. Stemmer), was the handicap winner. P. Townsend and P. Maynard dominated the A division, P Class races at the club. Townsend upset the South Island champion. P. Lester, in Saturday’s race and returned fastest time on both days. However, Maynard was the over-all winner of the Sea Spray Trophy. ■His sister. Miss E. Maynard, won jthe B division trophy. ; The Stewarts Gully event (drew entries from five Mark II Moth skippers, R. Smith gaining fastest lime in Omega and being placed third on handicap behind D. Rump (Slugg) and J. Platts (No. 6). Canale, skippered by W. Mockett, won the Oborn Trophy series completed by the Trailer Yacht Squadron on Saturday, after finishing second to Scintillation (R Grenfell) in the final heat. Ivanhoe (B Thurlow and J. Sinclair). Relent (J. Rountree and S. Jones) and Fluffin (C. J. i Barter) won their respective : divisions when the Canterbury club continued its series of cup

handicap races. The final heats, postponed from last week, will; be sailed in conjunction with the club championships next Saturday. The P Class skipper, J. Smith,! won the A division at Mount Pleasant on Saturday morning' and was again successful at the’ Canterbury club in the afternoon. Twiggy, sailed by Miss R. Shields, was third in each; race. J. D. Lough, sailing Acapulco, was the handicap winner of the open class race at Mount Pleasant. The fastest time in the fleet of 29 starters was returned by I. Mclntosh in Hi Fi. Legend (C.
