St Bede’s Boys Break 2 High Jump Records

Two St Bede’s College competitors in under age events gave sparkle to a generally subdued meeting by breaking two records at the inter-club athletics at Rugby Park on Saturday. With leading senior men and women away at the national championships, it was left to the younger athletes to create the interest.

St Bede’s added to its reputation for producing good high jumpers when R. Lockington and P. Crampton set new heights in the boys’ under 17 and under 15 divisions respectively. By clearing sft 10}in, Lockington beat by an inch, the record of another St Bede's boy, M. Walls. The; 13-year-old Crampton leaped sft BJin to improve the! under-15 record by 21in. About sft 9in tall, Crampton has done better but because he was then competing in a higher grade, the junior: (under-19), his performance was ineligible to qualify for the under-15 record. P. Brown (Technical) was in fine form with the junior hammer again. He tossed the 121 b weight 182 ft 3in,! only about 3ft short of his recently-established national junior record. The University - Shirley' sprinter. G. McKechnie, had two good wins by taking thesenior 60 metres in 7.ssec and the 200 metres in 22.95ec. Better known for his ability over the hurdles, G. Anderson (High School Old Boys) won the junior 200 metres in 22.55ec. B. Ford (Technical) returned the best 100 metre time by winning the junior contest comfortably in 11.4 sec. Competing in the girls’ under-17 grade, Miss L. Mackay (South Canterbury) recorded the best long jump in the women’s events with' a distance of 17ft 6Jin. beating by Ifin ■ the winning;
