Horse Events Notable Feature Of Kaikoura Show

Light horse and pony events were again a major attraction at the Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show, held at the South Bay Domain on Saturday.

The pony section, with more than 400 entries, was probably the largest judged at this show. Several classes had more than 20 entries, and exhibitors came from as far as Blenheim and Christchurch. The day was hot and sunny and a larger crowd than usual attended. Gate receipts, at $325, rose $6O on last year. The light horse section was not quite as large as last year, but most classes drew good competition. The championship was awarded to the Bevins family’s Samarkand, a well-performed hack in Christchurch district showrings. Earlier in the day, Samarkand, ridden by G. Bevins, won the I3st hack class, but, otherwise, awards were fairly well spread. Miss M. Fisher’s Marshall Gold had a successful day. This combination won the 15st hack class which drew only two entries, but then won the ladies’ hack in a class of 16, and the best paced and mannered hack in a class of 17. Later in the day, Marshall Gold won the jumpers’ championship. The old campaigner Flint, ridden by Miss Wendy Wadworth, was also well up in the prize list. He won the class for horse considered most suitable for hunting, and later a class for best walking horse. Another hack to win two events on the flat was Miss J. M. Dampier-Crossley’s Credo. The pony classes received strong support throughout, and both champions were well-known horses. The Bevins family’s Summer Magic won the major award for ponies to 14.2 hands, and C. Mahony’s Debonaire the championship for small ponies. Sheep Section In the sheep section the Romneys drew the best support in the classes for registered sheep, and awards were well spread. There was also a useful entry from district farmers in the flock sheep classes. The fa\’ourable season in the Kaikoura district was reflected in the fat sheep section, where the judge (Mr K. Dwyer) described quality as very good.

“It was obvious that exhibitors here had had a better season than most." he said. For the first time the show had a competitive section for beef cattle. Two classes for bulls drew 11 entries, al! but one being Hereford.*;. They were judged by Mr C H. Chambers, of Kekerengu. who praised the quality. Several special exhibits of particular interest in the district w’ere provided. The Kaikoura Historical Society, which is gathering a good collection of items associated with farming in the early days, had a model of a colonial-style kitchen. The district’s soil conservation scheme, with emphasis on flood control, was the basis of an exhibit by the Marlborough Catchment Board. One of the main attractions was the judging of the Kaikoura show queen contest." The winner was Miss M. Parsons, of Blue Duck Valley. Miss J. Latter, of Kekerengu. was placed second, and Miss S. Evans, of Kaikoura,’ third A shearing competition in which competitors had to shear two trial and two competition sheep was won by R. H. McKinnon, of Kaikoura. with 945 points. D. Harris (Kaikoura). was second with 93. and P. Kerr (Kaikoura). third with 90S. The new member of Parliament for Marlborough (Mr I. J Brooks) was among visitors at he show Speaking after the 'rand parade, he complimented exhibitors on the standard of their entries. The show, hr said, measured up to bigget shows in other part-s of the pro vince, including Blenheim. The president of the Kaikoura A and P. Association (Mr R. D Middleton) also thanked exh) bitors for their support With out them, country shows would collapse, he said Championship awards were: Horses Hack: Bevins Family’s Samarkand. Brood mare: Miss .1.
