Golf Champion On Count-Back
(N.Z. Press Association > INVERCARGILL. Otago won the South Island interprovincial golf championship at Otatara over the weekend, on a count-back from Mid-South Canter-; bury. Each had two wins and a half, but Otago scored 15 individual victories, three more than Mid-South Canterbury. Southland and Canterbury! were equal third each win-! nine twice, and the combined Buller - Westland - Marlborough • Nelson team won once. Of the three New Zealand representatives who played in the match against Australia in September—R C. Murray. G E. Clarke and G. D. Brown —Clarke had the best record. ’terday, after a 7 and 6 victory lover R. Farrant, the Canter-1 bury No. 1, he fought back from dormy three to halve his game with the top lefthander. P. Adams (Southland). Murray, following his onehole defeat by Clarke, halved with Adams, then decisively beat E. H. M. Richards (Can Terbury), 5 and 3, and K. Gar-1 diner (Combined), 6 and 4. But Brown had a poor tournament, losing to Gardiner and M. Strange (Southland),, halving with A. Browne (Mid-! (South), and beating Richards, 2 and 1. R K. Atkinson was the most successful of the Canterbury team, being one of. the six players to remain un-! beaten in the tournament. He, Clarke, C. Munro (Otago), P. Conlan (Otago); Strange and K. Downie (Southland) had three wins and a half. In the only match he failed to win, Atkinson was three
down at the turn to A. Morgan (Mid-South) but then won four- successive holes to take the lead for the first time. However, he lost the sixteenth and seventeenth but won the, last hole with a par to square the match. Farrant. a reserve for the last New Zealand team, had • two wins on Saturday, against. Adams and Gardiner, and two ! losses yesterday, to Clarke and Browne.
