Miss Wright’s Record Swim
The Canterbury swimmer. Miss J. Wright, broke a New Zealand record and beat the Commonwealth Games standard time for 800 metres freestyle in (the Australian championships at i Drummoyne Pool. Sydney, yesterday. Miss Wright, who broke Miss T. K. Shipston s New Zealand record in the 400 metres freestyle on Friday evening at the championships, took another of Miss Shipstons records with her time of 9min 58.2 sec for the 800 metres. She is the first New Zealand woman to swim the distance iq less than lOmin. Miss Shipston’s record was lOmin I.2sec. In the same session. Miss i Wright swam the 200 metres in 2min 18.6 sec. less than a second off Miss Shipston s national record and also close to the Commonwealth Games qualifying time. It was Miss Wright s best time by 2sec. However, she was eighth fastest qualified and missed the final Iby one place.
