The Viet Cong mounted four heavy bombardments against America.' bases during the night, but United States casualties were reported as light, a United States spokesman said today? An artillery base of the United States Ist Air Cavalry Division in Phuoc Long province, 80 miles north of Saigon, was hit by about 75 heavy mortar and recoilless rifle rounds in two attacks. The United States Command did not give precise [casualties on the grounds of ! security, and said only that casualties were light and no 'material damage was re-1 I ported. ; The third attack was [against a second base in Phuoc Long, about eight imiles away. The base was [hit by several Soviet-designed ; rockets, but there were no casualties and little damage. The fourth attack was in! northern Binh Dinh province, where 10 mortar bombs; smashed into an artillery, landing zone. They caused’ only light casualties and no damage. American Stratofortress bombers flew four missions during the day, dropping hundreds of tons of hig i explosives on guerrilla positions and bunkers in the Mekong province of Cau Doc. about 120 miles west of Saigon.
