Jumbo Jet Rule Eased
(N Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, March 1. London Airport is expected to follow the decision of the United States air authorities ■ to halve the recently-imposed 10 miles separation between jumbo jets and other aircraft. The American decision has been welcomed by all the airlines that have ordered jumbo ’[jets, and by operators of [other aircraft, for the restriction meant a limitation •on the number of aircraft • landing or taking-off when i the jumbo jet was nearby, i All modern airliners leave a wake of turbulence behind i them, caused by air displace- : ment, and it can upset an air- ’ craft following too closely bei hind. !■ The rule required that aircraft should approach no closer than 10 miles to the :; rear of, or 2000 feet below, [or 1000 feet above, a Boeing H 747. The Federal Aviation Ad- •( ministration has, however, re■[placed the rule by another, ■ requiring five miles of space) .[for all heavy classes of jet. i
