Fears About Effect On Economy
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 27. The Agricultural Production Council today said it was extremely concerned about the problem created by the combination of drought and unrest in the freezing industry.
“These troubles have coincided to create a problem which represents a major threat to our agriculture, our export trade, and our
national economy,” said tbe chairman (Mr D. M. Carter). “Moves made recently by the freezing workers to work overtime and on Saturday are a step in the right direction. “The council hopes that such action will lead to an improved situation for clearing the backlog of stock awaiting slaughter,” he said. “This backlog is a very real problem by itself, but add to that the widespread drought, the potential for facial eczema outbreaks, and the prospects of extreme shortages of winter feed and you have a problem which threatens our farming economy to its very roots.” The council sent a resolution to the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) and the National Development Council urging more efforts to j overcome the backlog of stock awaiting slaughter.
