Samoan P.M. Was Medical Officer

APIA, February 27.
The new Prime Minister of Western Samoa, Tupua Tamasese, was the first Samoan to graduate from the Fiji Medical School and for a time was medical officer at the Apia Hospital.
Elected in a secret ballot to succeed Fiame Mata’afa, the new leader is married and in his late forties.
exiled members of the Mau organisation.
His brother, Tupua Tamasese Meaole, also a champion for independence, became joint' Head of State in 1962. The new Prime Minister became joint Head of State in 1965 after a court dispute with hrs nephew, the son of Meaole.
Tupua Tamasese, who beat the former leader 25-20 in a ballot of members of Parliament, is the son of a leader in the group which sought independence' for Samoa more than 40 years ago. His father was killed in an incident in 1929 . when New Zealand military police fired on a group at a welcome home demonstration for
Subsequently he was elected to the Council of Deputies, resigning from there when elected to Parliament.
