UNIVERSITY ROLL

When enrolments closed at the University of Canterbury last evening 6144 students had enrolled. By the second week of the term the final figure is expected to be close to the university’s forecast of 6700.

Since enrolments began on Monday there has been a steady daily increase and the enrolment staff have been kept extremely busy. Faculty enrolments, with last year’s figures in parenthesis, are: arts. 2603 (2568); science, 1729 (1525): law, 341 324); commerce, 568 (514); music 56 (54); engineering, 686 (680); fine arts, 141 (170); and forestry, 20 (the subject was not available last year). The Registrar (Mr G. G. Turbott) said that the engineering and fine arts figures showed only postal enrolments and these would alter considerably by the second week of the term. In the music faculty, where the number of enrolments appeared low, the figures did not include those students who include music for their bachelor of arts degree. On July 1 last year the official roll at the university was 6243.

Mr Turbott said the university had estimated a final figure of 6700 to 6750 and it appeared that the roll on July 1 would be close to these figures.
