Industry Keen

(N.Z.P. A -Reuter—Copyright)

LONDON, February 26.

A British industrial spokesman suggested today that West Germany might provide Britain with her toughest competition if she managed to enter the Common Market. Nevertheless, Mr Campbell Adamson, director-general of the Confederation of British Industries, said that British industry was keen to enter and tackle the problems of the larger market. Negotiations would obviously be hard, particularly on such matters as British New Zealand trade and the Commonwealth Sugar Agreement.

Mr Adamson told a meeting of the Foreign Press Association not to pay too much attention to arguments likely to rage in Britain about the ' cost-of-living increases that might follow Britain’s entry. “The alternative, of staying out of Europe is infiinitely worse than going in,” he said.
