CLUE IN BEARD INQUIRY
Police attempts to develop in South Canterbury their investigation into the death of Miss Jennifer Beard have been unsuccessful. They have failed to find the owner, of the radio shown onl the left. Detective Inspector E. T Mitten said last evening that! on January 3 a man in a cat : called at Temuka Motors; about 10 p.in. and obtained; petrol and oil. The man and his car matched the descrip-, tions of the man and car the; police had been looking fori since the investigation began. ; In payment the man gave an; Autocrat Sanyo Super Fringe, transistor radio. He said he was travelling towards Dunedin. but intended to return to Temuka about February 3 ; “He has not returned and 1 we have been unable to find] him in Dunedin or anywhere else in the South Island,” Inspector Mitten said. On January 2 a similar man, in a similar car called at a Greymouth service station for petrol and he made similar statements to the attendant. It appears that he was the man who called at Temuka and it is important that we find him so that we can eliminate him from our investigation. “At this point we do not have a record of this person; having come forward, and it is an urgent matter. We I would also like to hear from any person who can tell us the owner of the radio.” The radio has a shoulder strap of cheese cloth similar r to that used in freezing works and allied industries. It has a white soft plastic outer case
the radio s case is black plastic with a white rim round the front and chromium round the face. Inspector Mitten said he had visited Timaru with De tective Sergeant D, Scott yesterday. His visit had nothing to do with the man who had earlier in the investigation been interviewed in Timaru.
