Mighty Chief Retired

Mighty Chief, considered a hopeless proposition as either a pacer or a trotter when first he was tried and subsequently one of the top trotters of his time, has been retired from racing. “He’s been involved in a few accidents and he split his knees open again recently,” said his Greenpark owner-trainer, L. R. Clark, earlier in the week. “I’ve turned him out and he’ll never be tried again as far as I am concerned ”

A nine-year-old gelding by My Chief from Gala Girl. Mighty Chief was bred at Oamaru by F Oliver, who sold him for 190 guineas at the national yearling sales. Mighty Chief was never over-raced and he gained 18 wins and 15 placings worth 529.775 in stakes. His successes included a Dominion Handicap, a Canterbury Park Cup and the New Zealand Trotting Championship Final at the Royal meeting in April, 1966.
