JUMBO JET TRAVEL
Lawyer’s View Of Insurance (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, February 13. A London lawyer said today that the aviation insurance business was in a chaotic state, and he produced some grim statistics of a possible jumbo jet disaster to illustrate his point. Mr Peter Martin told a conference of senior airline officers that too much was being spent on new aircraf! developments and too little on airfields, air traffic systems and training. He asked his audience to imagine the financial repercussions if a jumbo jet carrying 350 American lawyers to a London conference crashed.
“At an average worth of SUS3OO.OOO the passenger liabilities could cost something like SUSIOOm let alone the cost of the hull, baggage, cargo and mail,” Mr Martin said.
He suggested that the present “free-for-all” over air disaster claims should be replaced by a system based on State compensation for injuries or deaths, irrespective of fault and regardless of cause.
