Mount Cook National Park
Sir, —There is no doubt that what Mount Cook requires now is more cheap accommodation, such as provided by Mount Cook Motels. It is at most times not possible to get a bed there, yet I understand enlargement seems to be held up by the Mount Cook Park Board. This seems hard to understand, as both the standard and the price are satisfactory. The board says it is not its duty to provide accommodation, yet it seems to hold up private enterprise.—Yours etc., PUZZLED. February 10, 1970. [Mr G. Mollett, chairman
of the Mount Cook National Park Board, replies: “I can only reiterate what 1 said recently in reply to previous correspondents. The board is in the process of considering a plan to provide for the orderly development of land in the Hermitage area. The park board wants to be assured that the developments can be put in hand with essential services provided or available. The board certainly has no intention of holding up private enterprise front providing accommodation to meet needs, and is doing its best to speed things up.”] [This correspondence is now closed.—Ed, “The Press.”]
