IN PASSING

A shepherd’s wife, Mrs Jean Dunn (30), of North Doddington Farm, near Berwick, could not understand why a piece of coal at the front of her blazing fire was not burning. She took it out—to find it was an eight-inch stick of gelignite. Police were notified and a bomb disposal squad travelled 100 miles from Catterick to take charge of the explosive. Mrs Dunn, who has three children, said: "We could have been blown to bits. I shovelled the coal on to the fire and it was only when it was blazing that I noticed the tump was not burning. I will certainly mention it to the coalman when he makes his next delivery.”—Scotsman.
