Licensing By Computer
A computer system of radio and television licensing is being introduced by the Post Office this month. The computer can prepare up-to-date lists of current licence holders more quickly than at present enabling more efficient detection of unlicensed radio and television sets. A pilot scheme has been in use in New Plymouth since November and it has been decided to go ahead with a national computer system. Radio and television licence holders will receive a new licence form designed for computer processing as their licences become due for renewal. Under the system inquiries about licences will be answered without reference to central records in Wellington. The Post Office computer in Wellington will prepare accounts for all radio and television licence holders as fees become due. The computer will also prepare reminder notices if no payment has been received after four weeks.
