MAGUIRE RETIRES
(N Z. Press Association! AUCKLAND'. The New Zealand 10,000 | metres record-holder and [Olympic athlete, E. G. Maguire, disappointed and disillusioned about his performance in last week’s Auckland 10,000 metres championship, has retired from competitive athletics. The 27-year-old Maguire was badly beaten by the; national marathon champion,! J. L. Julian, in the Auckland' title race last week. He will now run only “on; a casual basis-fun runs when .1 have the time.” he said. After winning the national, six-mile championship and 1 setting the national 10.000 metres record at 28min' 15.4 sec two years ago, the; former Otago athlete was selected for the 1968 Mexico, City Games. But a leg injury forced him to withdraw from the Olympic 10,000 metres race after only nine laps.
